Iran names slain Khamenei’s son supreme leader as economic fallout deepens

Middle East countries are reporting more incoming aerial attacks Monday morning.

Here’s what we’re hearing.

Iran: Hours after Iran named its new supreme leader, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced new missile launches. And Israel launched another “wave of strikes” on what the military said was Iranian missile launch sites and regime infrastructure. A CNN team in Tehran reported that several thuds sounded across the capital from what appeared to be air strikes.

Lebanon: The Israeli military also said it struck Hezbollah infrastructure in the capital Beirut. Plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the city’s southern suburbs in video from Reuters news agency.

Separately, videos show a fire at Beirut’s Ramada hotel and damage to an apartment at the hotel after an Israeli attack. It comes after the Israeli military said it carried out a strike in Beirut overnight that killed several senior commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force.

Bahrain: Videos shared on social media and geolocated by CNN show a large fire and thick smoke billowing from an industrial zone housing the national oil company, BAPCO. Bahraini authorities previously reported that at least 32 people were wounded, when Iranian drone strikes hit the town of Sitra, which is about 6 kilometers (nearly 4 miles) from the industrial area. Children were among the wounded in the attacks, which targeted residential areas close to energy infrastructure, according to the NCC.

United Arab Emirates: A CNN team on the ground in Abu Dhabi heard loud booms, and said it was some of the loudest bangs they’ve heard since the start of the war. The country’s defense ministry said the sounds were a result of its air defense systems intercepting “ballistic missiles as well as fighter jets intercepting drones and cruisers.”

Saudi Arabia: Four drones headed toward the Shaybah oil field – one of the region’s largest oil fields – were intercepted and destroyed in the Rub’ al Khali vast desert, Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry said on X.

Kuwait: A drone was shot down by Kuwait’s National Guard “at one of the sites under its protection.” The force said it shot down the drone “as part of efforts to secure vital facilities.”

Qatar: Armed forces intercepted a missile attack, the Ministry of Defense said on X.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father Ali Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader, is going to be a hardliner, as he takes over the country facing an unprecedented crisis, a former US ambassador in the region says.

Gary Grappo, former US Ambassador to Oman, said Mojtaba Khamenei lost his father and some members of his immediate family to attacks by the US and Israel.

“We can dismiss any thought that we’re going to get off to a good start with this individual,” Grappo, who was US former deputy chief of mission in Saudi Arabia, told CNN on Sunday.

“He’s most definitely a hardliner and facing what I think is truly an existential crisis unlike anything the country has faced in its 47-year history,” he added, referring to when the Islamic republic was established in 1979.

Grappo called Moijtaba Khamenei “a very powerful figure” despite not having occupied any official positions in the past.

CNN team reports hearing thuds in Tehran

Several thuds sounded across Tehran on Monday morning from what appeared to be air strikes, a CNN team reported from the Iranian capital.

The impacts happened shortly after dawn and seemed to originate from the southwestern part of the city, they said.

Thick black smoke hangs over Tehran as fires from destroyed oil storage tanks appear to still be burning. It follows major airstrikes on several oil storage facilities on the city late Saturday.

CNN operates in Iran with the permission of the Iranian government, as required under local regulations, but maintains full editorial control over what it reports.

Large fire erupts at Bahrain’s BAPCO refinery

Videos widely shared on social media and geolocated by CNN show a large fire and thick smoke billowing from an industrial zone housing Bahrain’s national oil company, BAPCO, in Riffa on Monday morning.

It is unclear what started the fire and whether there’s been any impact on operations or personnel. CNN has reached out to BAPCO for comment.

Israel says it launched another wave of strikes in Iran

Israel on Monday launched an “additional wave of strikes” on what the military said was Iranian missile launch sites and regime infrastructure.

The Israeli Air Force hit “a rocket engine production facility and several long-range ballistic missiles launch sites,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The military also said it “continues to deepen the damage to military infrastructure belonging to Internal Security and the Basij.” The Basij is paramilitary volunteer militia that’s under the command of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC.)

Among the targets Monday morning were “the headquarters of the Iranian regime’s regional corps, the Internal Security forces command center of the Iranian regime in Isfahan, an additional base used by the IRGC and Basij, and the IRGC’s police headquarters,” the Israeli military said.

Iran announced a nationwide gathering on Monday to pledge allegiance to new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Iran’s Islamic Propagation Coordination Council called on the public to gather “simultaneously across the country” at 3 p.m. local time and “declare their bay’at,” or oath of allegiance, according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

In the capital Tehran, the main gathering will take place the city’s central Enqelab Square, IRNA reported.
